Match Preview: Enyimba v Abia Warriors

There are few days when I write first before I pray or rather, I write before I officially wake up for the day. Writing for me is simply a question of pulling out my phone and opening the “Notes” Application and as long as the creative juice is flowing, then the writing gets done.

I think however the drive for this post is the nightmare that now visits once in a while. And while this may not be the sort of nightmare that you see in our classic Nollywood movies, this one leaves you up at night pondering of how to weather the storm if it arrives.

Coach Emmanuel Deutschau says there is no need to panic because Enyimba won’t get relegated. Those are some strong words from a man who as much as I know hasn’t shown me that he is paddling the Enyimba boat in the right direction. Recent results hasn’t shown us anything different and his words doesn’t inspire much confidence either. Especially to me.

The key to escaping this drop is maximum points at home for the rest of the season and some away joy somewhere. Kano was always a tough ask with their own relegation fears but isnt it intriguing that bar the two clubs with deducted points, Enyimba was odds on to get the drop?

Warriors are coming this weekend and if I go back to what happened when we faced them the second time last season, isn’t it amazing how quickly things change? They needed help to get to their Continental Aspirations. Eguma wasn’t about to bulge. We beat them and were even bullish about it.

Tomorrow we need them. Or rather we need to beat them. They do have their own seasonal expectations and I won;t even rule out some grudges of both playing staff and the technical bench. Emmanuel Deutschau better have his methods and game plan ready and fit from the first whistle else Warriors will feast on us.

Enyimba has a leadership problem. We have alot of square pegs in round holes. Scratch that. We have a lot of square pegs lying around not knowing what to do with themselves. Joseph mentioned earlier in the week of the incident with the gaffer wearing shorts in his technical area for an NPFL Game.

I am certain we will evaluate Mr. Deutschau at the end of the season but if it is the shorts that is the charm for 3 points, well and by all means he should wear them. I also hope that both he and Mr New Sporting Director respect themselves and each person face their responsibilities. More on that another day.

Will they throw the gates open again? I hope they do. But it’s a local derby and I am not sure how an open gate gives Enyimba the leverage. Also, the last time the gates were opened, we still had huge sections of the stands empty. Enyimba has indeed regressed since this new administration.

It is also worth noting that Enyimba played 3 home games in a row behind closed doors. Most of those games, we dropped points in them. It is unlikely that we would have dropped points had we had our fans in the stands. I think they would have seen us over the line in those games. So why did we earn such punishment?

We have a leadership problem but let’s win this derby first.
