Enyimba vs Warri Wolves: Can We Get This Done?

Its Matchday!

Yesterday wasn’t the best of days for Nigerian football. Events on and off the pitch reminded us of how we are gradually sliding towards the wrong end of football development and influence. Our U17 boys were knocked out of the WAFU B U17 Boys Championship without recording a single win in their two group matches, while their female counterparts began their FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 1–2 defeat to Poland. To cap it all, Edo Queens lost their appeal against the decision to conclude the WAFU B Women’s CAF Champions League qualifiers final.

Through it all, today is a beautiful Sunday and another weekend of football across the Nigeria Premier Football League, with a few matches already played yesterday and the day before. Those results have done little to alter our position on the log, but the weekend has already produced another coaching casualty. The technical crew of Ranchers Bees was dissolved yesterday following their defeat to struggling Shooting Stars Sports Club on Friday.

For us, it is a home date with Warri Wolves here in Aba, and another opportunity to improve the team’s confidence and, more importantly, put some distance between us and the bottom of the table. We need to start building that cushion now, before it becomes too late and desperation sets in. Nobody needs a lecture on the dangers of desperation when a team is fighting for survival. Perhaps we could do a refresher on that later in the week.

Tomorrow will mark exactly one year since Warri Wolves came to Aba and left with all three points, in a season when we struggled to beat even one newly promoted side. Today, Warri Wolves are no longer newly promoted, but they have lost all four of their away matches this season. That makes this a promising opportunity for Enyimba to capitalise.

Still smarting from the 4–2 defeat in faraway Katsina that brought our brief unbeaten run to an end, the team should have enough motivation to get back on track at home. Our position on the log is far from encouraging, and the urgency of climbing out of the murky waters around the relegation zone cannot be overstated. Emmanuel Deutsch, who has surprisingly escaped any serious pressure despite our current position, knows that another poor result could bring wave after wave of scrutiny.

It is regrettable that we have found ourselves in this position, particularly with a meeting against one of our most stubborn opponents in the league over the years. But football always offers another chance, and this afternoon presents another opportunity to begin crawling out of the darkness and towards daylight.

It might be only the ninth game of the season, but positive results must become the norm. We cannot continue celebrating isolated points and victories as though they are extraordinary achievements. The occasional win is not enough; a club of Enyimba’s stature must build consistency into its performances and results. We must start winning again, and today is another chance to make that happen.

Kickoff is 4pm.

Enyimba Enyi!
