A Pulse, A Sign of Life: Rivers United 1-1 Enyimba

Good morning!

It’s a new week and the last one of the month. February is always the shortest month of the year and on non leap years like this one, it somehow feels even shorter. Just four of each of the seven days and boom, it’s gone. Some people only remember February because of Valentine’s Day, but for us this year, February has been anything but romance.

It has been eventful, noisy, chaotic and for the last seven days especially, the decibels went up so high that even the powers that be were forced into action. And then came the quickest possible test right after all that drama: a trip to Port Harcourt to face arguably the best team in the league right now. No matter who you support, Rivers United are one of the hardest teams to play in the NPFL anywhere, not to talk of in Port Harcourt.

But our ragtag team, still trying to climb out of the doldrums, went there with grit and a bit of swagger. We took the lead, lost it, and instead of collapsing like we usually do on the road, we held our nerves and fought all the way to the finish for a point from what is basically a figurative hell. We may not have passed the Rivers United test with flying colours, but nobody can say we failed it either.

The new gaffer Detchoua Gustave and his assistant Kelvin Ejeh have already set a tone. Whether that becomes their undoing or their eternal motivation, time will tell. But one thing is clear: belief is creeping back into the fan base and it must be sustained. We cannot afford another false dawn, especially now that this point we picked up is what separates us from the drop zone.

This is only the beginning. In fact, nothing has been done yet. If we are truly serious about escaping this relegation conversation, then the next eleven matches must be treated like eleven finals. No excuses. No sleepwalking. No charity.

Let’s get the Enyimba spirit started again.
