It’s Matchday.
The first of ten matches that stand between Enyimba F.C. and survival.
At this stage of the season every game carries weight, but today’s clash against Warri Wolves F.C. in Ozoro feels especially significant. This is the kind of fixture that demands complete focus from everyone connected to the club. There is no room now for lapses, careless moments, or avoidable mistakes. The margins are simply too thin.
Yesterday, club chairman Kanu Nwankwo visited the team to lift spirits and challenge the players to go all out for victory. His presence came as something of a surprise. After the state government stepped in to make several key changes including appointing a new coach, a sporting director, and even a new accountant, it would not have been unusual for tensions to rise. Such moves could easily have been interpreted as an encroachment on his authority.
Instead, he appeared to take a different approach. Rather than reacting publicly, he allowed the situation to settle and returned quietly to his duties, aligning himself with the broader leadership of the club.
That gesture suggests that whatever tensions may have existed behind the scenes could now be easing, at least for the moment. More importantly, it gives the impression that everyone involved with the club is finally pulling in the same direction with one clear objective in mind: survival. It may not be the grand ambition supporters are used to hearing, but even reluctant unity represents progress. As the saying goes, a house divided against itself cannot stand.
Our new manager Emmanuel Detchoua remains unbeaten in his first two matches in charge, though he is still searching for his first victory. Both games have ended in draws. A point away in Port Harcourt was respectable. Dropping two at home in Aba was frustrating.
Now comes the opportunity to turn those steady results into something more meaningful. Three points in Ozoro would not just improve the table position but also lift belief within the squad.
It is not an unrealistic target. Warri Wolves have struggled for consistency recently, unlike sides such as Rivers United F.C. or Kun Khalifat FC who have posed tougher challenges in recent weeks. Football can change quickly as well. Just yesterday Wikki Tourists F.C. managed a win after recording only two victories in fifteen matches.
Still, nothing will come easily. Enyimba’s record against newly promoted sides this season has been poor. From six matches against such teams the club has collected just three points with no wins, three draws, and three defeats. That statistic alone should be enough motivation to change the narrative today.
The task ahead is simple, even if executing it will not be. Stay together. Give everything. Leave nothing behind.
Go out there and get the job done.
Enyimba will survive.
Enyimba Enyi.
