Thursday Turf: Carrying Hope Into the Desert

Chidera Michael’s second half brace in Enyimba FC’s 3 to 1 home win last Sunday delivered a double dose of belief to the team and much needed relief to the fans as the People’s Elephant head into the closing fixtures of the year and the wrap up of the first half of the season.

Gradually, Chidera is establishing himself as the most reliable goal outlet among the club’s current crop of strikers. His development has been impressive. He began the season on the bench but steadily worked his way into relevance, first influencing games as a substitute before making decisive contributions as a starter. From scoring the opener in the away win at Bayelsa United to netting the winner in a thrilling five goal encounter against Bendel Insurance in Aba, his trajectory has been steadily upward.

In Enyimba’s last four league matches, Chidera has started and led the line. He has repaid that trust with three goals and one assist, taking his tally to five goals from five starts. It is the kind of return that not only boosts confidence but also provides the technical crew with a dependable focal point in attack.

At the other end of the pitch, the victory marked the full return of captain Pascal Eze, who made his first start of the season and immediately reclaimed his leadership role. Partnering him in central defence was Afolayan Peters, who continued his remarkable run of consecutive starts. Peters’ appearance took his streak to seventeen matches, equalling the decade old club record set by Chinedu Udoji in the 2015 and 2016 season.

Attention now turns to Maiduguri and a daunting trip to face El Kanemi Warriors. For visiting teams, the journey to Maiduguri is often as demanding as the match itself, testing logistics, endurance, and mental strength. Over the years, coaches have sometimes opted to protect key players from travel fatigue, handing opportunities to fringe squad members in a venue that has rarely been kind to the People’s Elephant.

In the last twenty five years, Enyimba have managed three hard fought draws in Maiduguri. The standout moment came in 2023 when Emeka Obioma’s solitary strike secured a historic victory on their turf, the first in several decades. That win completed a season double and played a part in Enyimba’s march to the league title.

El Kanemi Warriors remain strongest at home, backed by their passionate supporters who have turned the stadium into a fortress. Their survival hopes are anchored largely on home results, as they have traditionally struggled on the road. This season, they remain unbeaten at home with three draws from eight matches, while collecting just one point from nine away games, leaving them hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

For Enyimba, inconsistency has been the main reason for the constant movement up and down the table. The last time the club recorded consecutive league wins was in September against Bayelsa United and Bendel Insurance. Since then, results have lacked rhythm.

The stage is set for Enyimba to build on last weekend’s momentum, produce a disciplined performance in a hostile environment, and perhaps rely on a moment of individual brilliance to tip the balance. Just as Obioma did in 2023, someone must step forward and seize the moment. It is not beyond reach.

What is required is clear tactical direction, proper motivation, and above all improved travel arrangements for the team, far removed from the embarrassing three day road trip that undermined last season’s efforts.
