A few thoughts ahead of the Abia Derby

Good morning to you.

The weekend is here and for us Enyimba fans, amidst everything we might be involved with today, thoughts on tomorrow’s fixture must surely interrupt intermittently. Abia Warriors are on course to achieve the unimaginable and 3 points at our place will help their cause.

Warriors have had a phenomenal season. A couple of times they have flirted with Relegation but this season, they are on course to truly put down a marker. They can finish in the top tier of the League and have Continental Duties next season and in the same vein finish above us for the first time ever.

I’m going to ignore the consequences of that last statement for now. But at your spare time, think – how has Abia Warriors done better than us this term? The answers won’t be far off – Kanu and Ekwueme the twin names that have rubbed Enyimba in the mud.

I digress, apologies. But Imama has grown his team to get firing on all cylinders and I heard they have as much as 3 players who have at least 10 goals each. Enyimba doesn’t have one player on double digits. That’s the difference between us and them.

Honestly, Warriors finishing above us is no big deal but what is, is the conversations among a few of our fans that we should do whatever we can to seal the deal for them. I love Imama – I love his team but I bet you, he will rather that his team beats Enyimba soundly and without help.

We can wish Warriors all the best but throwing the game? That is absurd and I don’t believe anyone at the club is remotely even thinking of sanctioning it. First it damages the reputation of the League and the club. Again, what stops other teams from doing same to achieve a favorable landing? Now you can see where this can go to.

Warriors will give a good game. They always do. I still recall Cletus Itodo firing Warriors into the lead beyond the hapless grasp of the “Arugo Monkey”. That goal was all they needed and they locked shop – Enyimba got nothing from that game, except of course the phobia for Warriors.

This Sunday, we shall see who takes the day and I dare tell you, whoever wins will have to earn the rights to win. If we win, we get bragging rights and if we don’t, we wish them all the best in their Continental aspirations. It’s tomorrow. It can’t come soon enough.

In other but related news, we shall host our first live Space (on X,.formerly twitter) right after the Abia Derby. Hopefully we have good thoughts to share then and someone might even win an Enyimba jersey. You never know.

Thats all I can put together for you guys today. Back tomorrow with a Match preview.
