It’s Matchday!
Sundays during the NPFL season carry their own rhythm. Christmas might be creeping in as markets are packed, roads jammed with fresh “December cars,” and decorations springing up everywhere but no matter how chaotic things get, Nigerian football fans somehow still reserve space in their hearts (and schedules) for football. That’s the real December tradition.
Today, we open our December fixtures against the defending champions, Remo Stars. Once upon a time, Remo could not buy a win against us. From our first-ever meeting in 2016, up until July 2022, we had that fixture on lockdown… until Sikiru Alimi broke the spell just after the restart on that fateful evening. Since then? They’ve beaten us four more times while we, the mighty Enyimba, have not managed a single win anywhere, not at home and not away. Football humbles everybody.
Remo deserve credit for how far they’ve come. They earned last season’s title through sheer consistency and smart football, though their title defence has wobbled badly this term. You could excuse it as continental stress, early-season fatigue, or the pressure of being everyone’s target but that’s their headache, not ours. Today is NPFL business.
As for us, this season has been… let’s just call it a roller coaster with a few missing bolts. There’s been struggle where there shouldn’t be struggle, glimpses of fight when we least expected it, and a coaching change that saw Eguma exit and Lawrence Ukaegbu steadying the ship while Ayodeji Ayeni warming up on the sides to step in. Word on the street is that Ayeni is already doing quiet repairs behind the scenes. Fingers crossed.
If there’s ever a moment to steal something from Remo Stars, it’s today. They’ll come at us like wounded lions which is guaranteed, but if our boys can keep their heads, stay organised, and remain locked in until the final whistle, maybe… just maybe… we leave Abeokuta with a point or even all three.
But as always, manage your expectations.
Kickoff is 4pm, and the match will stream live across all NPFL platforms.
