2e:T15f9,<p class="isSelectedEnd">It is the penultimate day of the month and the final Sunday of August, but more importantly, it is our first matchday of the 2026/27 EuroMatch-NPFL season. We have waited long enough to see the boys return to the pitch, defend the badge, fuel our passion and compete again for points, pride, history, glory and, of course, those all-important bragging rights. The wait is finally over.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Our first assignment takes us to Minna, where the People’s Elephant will face the Ikon Allah Boys of Niger Tornadoes at the somewhat new-look Bako Kontagora Stadium by 4pm. It is a new season, though, and with the near-total squad overhauls that have become normal across Nigerian football during transfer windows, almost every club enters the campaign looking slightly unfamiliar. Last season’s results can therefore provide some context, but they are hardly a reliable crystal ball for what will happen today.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Still, there is a little history worth keeping an eye on. For eight years, Enyimba had managed to avoid consecutive away defeats against Niger Tornadoes. Our most recent visit to Minna, however, ended in a 2-0 defeat, one of Tornadoes’ more convincing victories over us in recent times. Starting a new season by allowing that result to become the beginning of an unwanted pattern is something we can certainly do without.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For Enyimba, the buildup to this match has been particularly interesting. Less than 24 hours before kickoff, the club finally pulled back part of the curtain and introduced 13 new players. After weeks of secrecy, speculation and amateur detective work from supporters, we finally have some names and faces to attach to this new-look squad.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">On paper, the recruitment appears to offer a decent blend of experience and youth, and naturally there is excitement about what some of these new legs might bring. But my position on transfers remains unchanged: recruitment is always something of a gamble. A player can look like the missing piece when his announcement graphic drops and then discover that football has other plans for him. Another can arrive without much fanfare and become the player supporters cannot imagine the team without.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">So, for now, all we really have are possibilities. Competitive football will give us the answers.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">There may still be more additions too. With roughly two weeks remaining before the transfer window closes, there is enough time for more names to arrive and perhaps a few more surprises. At Enyimba, we have become quite familiar with surprises lately, although hopefully the ones coming this season will be pleasant.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">There was also a subtle but important reminder ahead of the game that Emmanuel Deutsch remains firmly in charge, with the coach offering a sensible assessment of what preseason actually means. Rather than making extravagant promises, he essentially acknowledged that the effectiveness of all the work done over the past few weeks will only become clear once competitive football begins.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">That is probably the most reasonable way to look at today.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Preseason provides preparation, not proof. Friendly victories can improve confidence and tactical ideas can look wonderful when nothing is at stake, but the real examination begins when three points are sitting on the table. Today we start discovering whether the work done behind those very firmly closed doors has produced a team capable of competing at the level expected of Enyimba.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We will begin to see how the new players fit together, how those retained from last season respond, what Deutsch wants his team to look like and whether the combinations developed during preseason can survive the pressure of an actual league match. Most importantly, we will see whether Enyimba can begin collecting points immediately.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">There will naturally be imperfections. Thirteen new players mean new relationships have to develop across the pitch, and nobody should expect everything to click perfectly after one competitive match. But the minimum expectation should be organisation, commitment and evidence that there is a clear idea behind what we are trying to do.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Last season taught us the danger of spending too long waiting for things to improve.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The NPFL season is a marathon. Thirty-eight matchdays represent a very long road, and one afternoon in Minna will neither win nor lose the championship. A defeat would not automatically mean another disastrous season, just as a victory would not suddenly make us champions-elect.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But there is absolutely nothing wrong with beginning a marathon with a strong stride.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Three points today will not guarantee us a tenth league title, but they would immediately improve the mood, give the new players confidence and provide supporters with an early reason to believe that all the secrecy and preparation might actually have been leading somewhere.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The rehearsals are finished now. The names have finally been revealed, preseason results no longer matter and the talking can gradually give way to football.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Let us get started.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And hopefully, let us start on the front foot.</p>
