Like many of you, I have enjoyed this World Cup. Oh Did you see France v England last night? what a game! But beyond the goals, the drama and the unforgettable moments, it has also provided a welcome distraction from everything happening around Enyimba. And while watching some of the world’s best teams, one lesson has stood out above every other: champions are built in the mind long before they are built on the pitch.
One team has particularly caught my attention. Argentina. Not because they have played perfect football every time, but because they have repeatedly shown an unwavering belief that no match is over until the final whistle. They fight when they are behind, remain composed under pressure and somehow find ways to escape situations that would break most teams. That is not luck, nor is it coincidence. It is mentality. The greatest teams are remembered not simply because they possessed exceptional talent, but because they created a culture where surrender was never an option and every player understood the standards expected of him.
That is exactly what Enyimba must rediscover.
Last season should have been a wake-up call for everyone connected to this football club. Enyimba, the most successful club in Nigerian football, found itself battling relegation until the closing stages of the campaign. Yes, the team survived, and those players deserve credit for refusing to give up. But survival cannot become the benchmark for a club of this stature. Escaping relegation should be remembered as a warning, not celebrated as an achievement.
The Enyimba many of us grew up watching carried itself differently. It expected to compete for league titles every season. Continental football was considered the minimum standard, not an ambitious dream. Opponents respected the badge before the first whistle because they knew they were facing a team that expected to win. That confidence did not come from talent alone. It came from a winning mentality that ran through the dressing room, from players who demanded excellence from themselves and each other every single day.
That mentality is what this current squad must develop. Football is not always won by the team with the better tactics or the more gifted individuals. Sometimes your opponents will enjoy more possession, create more chances or simply play better football. Those are the moments when character becomes decisive. The teams that refuse to panic, refuse to surrender and refuse to accept defeat often find a way to win anyway. That is why champions remain champions year after year.
I know some people will immediately point to unpaid bonuses and player welfare, and they would not be wrong. Professional footballers deserve to be treated professionally, and every legitimate obligation owed to them should be honoured. Accountability cannot be selective. The club must do its part if it expects players to give everything for the badge.
At the same time, mentality is not reserved for comfortable moments. History remembers teams that overcame adversity together. The greatest Enyimba sides were not just technically gifted; they were mentally relentless. They believed they could beat anyone, anywhere, regardless of the circumstances. They represented something bigger than themselves, and that belief became part of the club’s identity.
The players who remain at Enyimba now have a choice to make. They can allow the disappointments of last season to define them, or they can use those painful memories as the foundation for something much greater. No supporter wants to hear that the club survived another difficult campaign. Supporters want to see Enyimba competing where it belongs—challenging for trophies and fighting for continental football once again.
There is another mentality in Nigerian football that has always bothered me. Every season we hear the familiar excuse that it is almost impossible to win away from home. Champions do not build title-winning campaigns around excuses. They find solutions. When Rangers needed an away victory on the final day to equal Enyimba’s league title record, they found one. Their captain led from the front when everything was on the line. That is what leadership looks like. That is what mentality monsters do.
With the Kalu Nwekes no longer at the club, others must now step forward. Leadership is not something that comes with an armband; it is earned through performances, courage and an unwavering refusal to accept mediocrity. This team does not necessarily need eleven superstars. It needs players who refuse to be beaten, who fight for every loose ball, who demand more from one another and who understand that wearing the Enyimba badge is both a privilege and a responsibility.
Talent will always help you win football matches, but talent alone has never sustained greatness. The clubs that build lasting legacies are the ones whose players develop a mentality that refuses to settle for less than excellence. If Enyimba truly intends to return to the summit of Nigerian football, that mentality must become the foundation of everything the club does.
Because talent wins matches, but mentality wins championships. And only mentality monsters stand the test of time.
