Good morning, good afternoon, and if you are gearing up for another sleepless night this World Cup season, good evening. I hope your love for football keeps you awake for all the right reasons. As we prepare for a new campaign, the current Enyimba FC expectations weigh heavily on the minds of every loyal supporter.

There is an African proverb that says, “The child who does not respect the traditions of the elders will not sit with the elders.” Having paid my respects to the loyal supporters of Nigeria’s greatest football club, it’s time to address the elephant in the room.

Don’t bother looking for hidden meanings. There is no symbolic elephant here. I’m talking about the one you and I pledged our hearts to long ago—the People’s Elephant, Enyimba Football Club.

Enyimba FC Expectations: Last Season’s Harsh Reality

Before we can move forward, we must first look back.

The 2025/26 NPFL season was one to forget. Meeting high Enyimba FC expectations was impossible last season. We finished 13th with 49 points. To the casual observer, that may not seem catastrophic. But for a club that lifted the league title just three years ago, it represents one of our poorest campaigns in recent memory.

The league table tells an even grimmer story. We escaped relegation by just two points. Had we failed to beat El Kanemi on the final day, as captured in One Last Survival Dance, we could easily have been preparing for life in the Nigeria National League instead.

That should concern every single person connected with this football club.

Defensively, the numbers were equally worrying. We scored 44 goals and conceded 42, ending the season with a goal difference of just +2. For a club with Enyimba’s pedigree, those are not championship numbers.

It became painfully obvious that while we still possessed enough quality to score goals, we lacked the defensive solidity and midfield control needed to compete consistently throughout the season.

The Silent Rebuild: Transfers and Rumours

The League has confirmed August 28 as the start of the new season, yet the silence from Enyimba has been deafening. Like many supporters, I refresh my X timeline far more often than I should, hoping for news of new arrivals, serious transfer targets, or even credible rumours. Instead, there has been little to suggest what direction the club intends to take.

For a team that conceded far too many goals last season, strengthening the defence should be the priority. The midfield also needs reinforcement to provide balance and protection.

We already know this team can find the back of the net. But football isn’t won by scoring two goals one weekend only to concede two the next. Unless the club addresses these defensive frailties, we risk reliving the frustrations of last season where internal issues almost cost us everything.

One moment this week particularly caught my attention. Shooting Stars supporters were celebrating their club’s transfer activity online when an Enyimba fan boldly declared that we would win the league this season.

The response came swiftly:

“Enyimba should first focus on finishing in the top ten.”

That stopped me in my tracks.

Restoring Our Standards and Enyimba FC Expectations

Is this really what we have been reduced to? Have we lowered expectations so much that we now consider merely finishing in the top half a success?

Excellence built this club. A club that set standards others tried to emulate. We must never allow those standards to disappear, as discussed in The Cost of Inconsistency in the NPFL, and our Enyimba FC expectations must remain at the very top.

I’ve said my piece. I’ve addressed the elephant in the room.

Now it’s time for the Elephant to respond—not with promises, but with action.

As supporters, we also have a role to play. Keep asking questions. Hold the club accountable. Support the team when they deserve it. Raise your voice when they fall short. Above all, never stop believing that Enyimba can return to where it belongs.

Because the People’s Elephant has stumbled before—but it has always found a way to rise again.
