Hello Barau; New Season, New Foes

The sun climbs over Enyimba Stadium, lighting up our chants as the city stirs to life. With each dawn, our loyalty wakes anew; forever faithful, forever loud.

It appears I’ve found my voice again. Last weekend brought a welcome distraction — so intense, we momentarily forgot about Enyimba and all her troubles. Someone asked me recently, “What would you do if you were to advice those in charge of Enyimba?” Quite the question. It’s simple; “Go Read Our Blog”.

The new league season approaches, and yes, it brings some excitement with it.
But for us, it’s unfamiliar terrain; the sobering reality of stepping into yet another season with no real hope of silverware.

I hear a few players have been signed, but the silence from within the club is uncomfortable. You’d think by now there’d be some unveiling, some noise. Instead, it’s just crickets. Crickets… and then some more crickets.

The draws for the new league season was made yesterday. We kick things off with an away trip to newcomers Barau FC. They’re based in Kano, which means two away trips to Kano this season. I suppose this is how teams feel when they have to come to Abia State twice a year.

I don’t know much about Barau, but I do know their gaffer: Coach Ladan Bosso. A league veteran who’s seen it all. He left Bayelsa United and took his bags up North when the call came. All the best to him and to them.

So, they’ll host us first and try to ride that “initial garagara”. Eager to punch above their weight and prove they belong. Fair enough. Reminds me of Abia Warriors “that year“. Well, the challenge goes both ways. It’s a test for them, sure but one for us as well. Hopefully, we show up, fully tuned in, and ready to have one helluv of a season.

As for realistic expectations this season? Honestly, I am not sure. But I’ll really love the basics – Get the club running decently again. That may mean some, if not all of those running things now to leave and honestly, I don’t mind. There has been way too many instances where they have shown they are wearing shoes too big for their feet.

A wise man once said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” But looking at the leadership we currently have, it’s hard to hope for a beautiful season ahead. I’ll gladly eat the humble pie if you prove me wrong. But will you also bow out with the same grace if, for the third straight season, it is clear you still have no clue what you’re doing?

Back tomorrow,
