Enyimba clinched their first league win of the campaign with a narrow but deserved 1–0 victory over Niger Tornadoes at the Aba Township Stadium.
How It Happened
The visitors started brightly, pushing forward in the early minutes, but they were stunned in the 7th minute. Joseph Abiodun lit up the stadium with a superb volley that flew past the Tornadoes’ goalkeeper, giving the People’s Elephant the perfect start.
From that moment, Enyimba took control. Ufere Chinedu and Mohammad Hussaini dictated the tempo in midfield, while striker Bassey John missed chances to extend the lead. Tornadoes rallied towards halftime but lacked precision in their final ball.
The second half saw Tornadoes pressing harder, testing Enyimba’s defensive discipline. Hussaini stood tall at the back, and new goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga made key saves to keep the clean sheet intact. Substitutes Ifeanyi Okechukwu and Chidera Michael injected energy, though Michael squandered a golden chance late on. The closing stages grew tense and physical, with three Enyimba players booked. Tornadoes almost snatched a draw from a stoppage-time free kick, but Ogunga pulled off a decisive save.
After six nervy added minutes, the referee’s whistle confirmed Enyimba’s first three points of the new NPFL season.
