Happy Weekend!
Not exactly a greeting a lot of us can resonate with right now, thanks to our recent run of results. Weekends are supposed to be for rest, relaxation, and recovery, with maybe a dash of enjoyment after a week’s hustle. But for football fans, weekends mean something else entirely: a fresh subscription to football passion and emotion. We don’t always know what we’ll get. It might be joy, frustration, or heartbreak but we sign up anyway. And whatever comes, we take it.
Lately, though, we’ve been getting the short end of the stick. From the mild satisfaction of a point in Lagos to the uneasy acceptance of another at home against a solid Rivers United, followed by the rude shock of consecutive defeats to newly promoted Kun Khalifat and Warri Wolves. What been a draining ride. The emotions? Disheartening. The vibe? Flat. We’ve been walking around with that defeated look, like fans who forgot how to celebrate.
This recent slide is eerily familiar as it echoes the early days of the dark stretch that eventually led to the hiring of our current gaffer after Yemi Olarenwaju Daniel endured that infamous winless run. That’s one “streak of slips” we never want to relive. The taste is bitter, and the banter from rival fans? Brutal. It’s a reminder that in football, memories are short and patience, even shorter.
Still, let’s not ring the alarm bells just yet. It’s early days. There’s still time to turn the ship around. We’ve seen enough work behind the scenes to know no one’s taking this lightly. But to see that turnaround, attitude has to be right, from the bench to everywhere else. Leadership must come with accountability. No divided house survives a storm, and this, right now, feels like one we must weather together.
We’ve gone from a seven-match unbeaten run to back-to-back defeats and yes, those losses came against teams that just climbed into the top flight. That stings. But football has a way of humbling and healing at the same time. The key is how we respond.
Here’s to hoping this weekend brings a restart and not another repeat.
Back tomorrow with some pre-game talk.
