Good morning!
It’s the penultimate Sunday of the month, and just as we started September, we’re still unbeaten and yet to concede a goal. That’s no small feat. Now, I know opening with that feels like tempting fate, but let’s be real: going an entire season without a defeat is a mammoth task, and pulling off a campaign without conceding is even tougher. So yes, it’s a matter of when and not if the run ends. But one thing is certain and it is that we don’t want that day to be today.
Today, instead, is another chance to stretch the record, to add another brick to what’s already looking like the foundation of a promising season. Keep moving in the right direction, avoid those little foxes that spoil the vine, and the story writes itself.
The good news? We’ve welcomed Awazie, Asibe, Atule, and Onyema back into the fold. No fresh injury concerns, the mood in camp looks upbeat, and Ufere’s pre-match comments suggest the boys are fired up. Bendel Insurance will be a tough test, but on paper, we’re well-equipped. Just don’t expect a flurry of goals as we’ve only managed three all season. But here’s the sweet spot: every time we’ve scored, we’ve won. That’s the kind of statistic you love to build on.
Still, Insurance haven’t been the easiest nut to crack since they returned to the NPFL. Just one win in our last nine meetings, and even that came with a bit of luck, first, a Sunday Anyanwu own goal before Atule snatched the winner back in November 2023. Ismail Seriki equalized that day for them, but Ismail has already visited us this season and lost. Maybe that’s a good omen? Either way, meeting number ten feels like the perfect time for us to tip the scales.
For the men on the touchline, this is only the second dance between Greg Ikhenoba and Stanley Eguma. Last time, Greg had the edge. This time, Eguma will be eager to set the record straight.
Insurance themselves have been steady since that opening-day loss in Maiduguri. They’ve scored in every game since, with two 1-1 draws, then a 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes last weekend. They’re climbing, no doubt, but Aba is not an easy stopover.
Given where we sit in the table, this is the perfect time to get our noses in front early and hold on. Three points today won’t just be another win, they could be the insurance policy we need for a season that’s shaping up to be special.
Kickoff is 4pm.
Don’t miss it.
