Enyimba: Still Here, Still Hoping

Good morning, Enyimba People,

Welcome to a brand new week, and congratulations to the Enyimba of England, who shocked all of humanity by beating Oil Money FC. Imagine if you had staked your life’s savings on that result last night. You would probably be singing Hallelujah this morning.

Regardless, you can still sing Hallelujah, not because of a win at the punt, but simply for another opportunity to make your world a better place. The small interactions we make each day truly matter. If you are kind to the next person, you are already doing your part to change the world around you.

Before writing this blog today, I searched the internet for some warm Enyimba news. Not the English one, I mean the real Enyimba. Sadly, there was not much. Actually, there was none. I know it feels like we have had a lot of criticism lately on the blog. That is honestly the part that distresses me the most.

We have always been a happy blog. But these days, we just cannot find anything worth celebrating. I think the last time I felt genuinely happy was when we signed Brown Ideye. Even with that, the excitement did not last. News broke almost immediately that the club had swapped Yema for Stanley Eguma.

So how do we share positive stories when there is nothing uplifting to talk about?

Here is another example. Some outlets are reporting that Enyimba has signed or is about to sign Left Back Chris Madaki. That name has been around for a while, even during my time working in the League about ten years ago.

A player who has done the rounds at Nasarawa and Katsina United can hardly be the kind of signing we should be making right now. A post from two years ago said he was 27. If that was true, he should be 29 this year. Add a little extra for the undocumented years and that should tell you all you need to know.

If the technical crew and board truly want Enyimba to be successful this season, we cannot continue following the path of signings like Bernard Ovoke. Talent may still be present, but what about fitness and energy? Or are we now operating as a retirement home for players?

Maybe what we need is a scouting agency. Something that actively looks out for fresh talent and recommends them to interested clubs. It seems like big teams in Nigeria no longer have time to scout properly. Maybe someone else can do the work and get paid for it. I will give that some more thought.

Wishing the boys all the best as they play this evening. Hopefully, it is streamed on YouTube as promised by the organizers.

Back tomorrow.

  1. Reading this really captures the heartache of being an Enyimba fan lately. Still, holding on to hope is what makes the highs so meaningful when they do come.
