Good day!

It’s a new week, a day the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be glad in it. It is also the morning after, and we are wondering how we are expected to sing the Lord’s song in a strange land. Yes, we are in a strange land.

Yesterday, we got a result against visiting Warri Wolves. These stubborn Seasiders have been a thorn in our flesh over the years, and even going on relegation didn’t stop them from being problematic. Last season, which was their first since returning to the league, they came to Aba and picked all three points. Exactly one year later, we are talking about another winless encounter against the same club.

I’ve seen the highlights and listened to the pressers. Don’t wonder why I don’t watch home matches. The club management banned myself and a few others for being critical of the team. Some of the comments we made about the team were apparently not okay with them, and perhaps if we don’t see the team’s matches at home, they would have been excelling. Well, I don’t think our absence has had any impact, positively or negatively, on the team.

Enyimba has been underwhelming this season and we cannot lie about that fact. It’s only nine matchdays in, but the signs are troubling. One of my friends, whom I eventually convinced to start following Enyimba instead of his European alternatives, has always called me to lament about the brand of football he sees and his concerns about the quality of the team. I also know he isn’t the only one critical of the team recently but, as I always tell him, time will reveal everything.

We have failed to get maximum points at home for the third time this season, and it is only five home matches played. That is a troubling statistic. Seven points from a possible 15 is not good enough, especially when we consider our away numbers, which are even worse: just one point from a possible 12. This is not the Enyimba of our dreams, and I will not stop saying it.

The earlier we decide to turn the corner, the better for everyone affiliated with the club — management, coaches, backroom staff, players, fans and everyone else who has a stake in the Peoples Elephant.

There are still 29 matches to go. The season is far from over, but we need to halt this drop before it becomes a plunge.
