Good day, guys.

It’s me, your favourite (i hope) Enyimba fan. It’s been a while. My colleagues have been holding the fort so well that I only get to write once in a blue moon, and a blue moon, in this case, is when every other writer on this blog goes on vacation at the same time. Like today.

Seven match days in, our league campaign is finally underway! The false starts are behind us, and over the last three games, the signs have been good. It started, funnily enough, with a game we expected to lose: a hard-earned draw in Kano. We came home and beat Shooting Stars, and yesterday we followed it with a 2-0 win over Plateau United.

A 2-0 home win over a side like Plateau United should be a “normal” at the Enyimba Stadium. But we haven’t been doing “normal” lately. Our routine has become home draws, home defeats and, cynically speaking, management celebrating points we have dropped at home. That is the new normal. And so, if our season is truly back up and running, this horrible new normal has to go.

And no, it isn’t only about results. Somewhere along the way, we became comfortable with empty seats. This is a club whose supporters once packed the stadium and created an atmosphere opponents could feel before the referee even blew his whistle. Now some matches look like they’re being played behind closed doors. Low attendance should never be normal for a club of Enyimba’s stature. It is a symptom, not the disease, and ignoring it won’t make it go away.

Then there’s the club’s media space. Journalists have now been banned from the stadium, access has been restricted, and genuine football voices have been pushed aside. And who is championing this? So-called “media people” whose main qualification seems to be popularity on Facebook. This is the classless bunch who now appear to be running Enyimba’s media outfit.

Let me be clear: there is no single approved route into a club’s media team. The problem starts when social media activity is mistaken for journalism, and when the press is treated as a PR department whose job is to celebrate everything and question nothing.

Enyimba needs journalists who can report, ask questions, challenge and document, and who can support the institution without becoming its mouthpiece. Nobody is asking you to quiz Kanu on how much he takes home, or whether players are truly owed. But making yourself a wanna-be dictator simply because you occupy an office today is nothing short of a disgrace. You should hang your head in shame.

So maybe these three results mean more than seven points. Maybe they’re a chance to start reversing everything we’ve slowly learned to accept.

We need the old normal back: Enyimba winning at home, Aba being an intimidating place to visit again, supporters having a reason to fill the stands, journalists free to do their jobs, and a club that understands criticism is not an attack on Enyimba.

We don’t need to bring back everything from the past. But some standards were never supposed to disappear. If this really is the start of our season, restoring them should be part of the revival too.

Because some things should never have become normal in the first place. Lest I forget: back-to-back goals from Ifeanyi Ihemekwele? That’s one new normal we can happily keep.
