There was a time when an Enyimba defeat in Aba was an event. It was unexpected, uncomfortable and often difficult to explain. Visiting teams came to Aba knowing they were entering the home of the People’s Elephant, where Enyimba would dictate the terms. That aura has gradually disappeared, and the latest 2-3 defeat to Sporting Lagos is another painful sign of just how far the club has fallen.<\/p>\n
Four matches into the League season, Enyimba have four defeats and zero points. The results alone are bad enough, but it is the manner of them, and everything happening around the club, that makes the situation so troubling. The shameful post-match scenes after the defeat to Inter Lagos overshadowed what was already a tame performance and another poor result. With the club rooted to the foot of the table, the football itself has almost become a footnote to the problems surrounding it. When it rains, it pours.<\/p>\n
What makes this even harder to digest is the club Enyimba once were. There was a period when they represented the gold standard in Nigerian football, not only because of the trophies but because of the organisation, authority and standards that came with them. Today, there appears to be a decline in almost every facet of the club. The prolonged in-fighting at the top has not helped, and performances on the pitch seem to have followed the same troubling trajectory. A house divided against itself cannot stand, and Enyimba increasingly look like a club struggling to pull in one direction.<\/p>\n
Nowhere is that decline more obvious than at home. In the 2013 Nigerian Premier League season, Enyimba went through the entire campaign without conceding a single goal in Aba. That statistic says a great deal about what the club represented and the fear that came with playing the People’s Elephant at home. Today, visiting teams arrive at that same ground believing they can take something away. Ikorodu City have won in Aba. Inter Lagos have won in Aba. Now Sporting Lagos have come, scored three goals and left with all three points. The cracks in the fortress are impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n
The pattern is even more striking given what happened before this game. Sporting Lagos had just been dismantled by Abia Warriors in Lagos, while Enyimba had huffed and puffed their way to defeat against Inter Lagos in Aba. Yet in our case, it was Sporting Lagos who walked away with the points. Football does not always follow the script, but when the same pattern keeps appearing, it becomes difficult to dismiss as coincidence.<\/p>\n
A few days before the game, Kanu Nwankwo called on supporters to keep backing the team and expressed confidence that the turnaround would begin against Sporting Lagos. The supporters did not need a rallying call. What they had been waiting for since preseason was communication about the direction of the club, its plans and what exactly was being done to restore Enyimba to where they belong. Being told that hard times do not last forever may offer some comfort, but words alone cannot change the situation unless the administrative and technical failings behind it are properly reviewed and addressed.<\/p>\n
The supporters will continue to support Enyimba. But support should not be mistaken for blind acceptance. Good performances and positive results would do more to lift the mood than any statement ever could. This was supposed to be an important stretch of the season, with three matches in seven days offering a chance to reset, rebuild confidence and repair the relationship between the team and its supporters. Instead, the defeat to Sporting Lagos has only deepened the concern.<\/p>\n
Four matches are still too few to predict how the season will unfold, and I will hold my horses before declaring the campaign doomed. But there is a difference between refusing to overreact and refusing to acknowledge warning signs. What makes the future look so bleak is not simply the four defeats. It is that there is very little around the club to suggest where the recovery will come from. The old Enyimba identity cannot be summoned by invoking history. Reputation cannot defend a lead. Past trophies cannot restore a fortress that no longer frightens anyone. Something has to change, and it has to go beyond the next team sheet or the next ninety minutes.<\/p>\n
There is still time to change the direction of this season. But time alone will not fix what is broken. Enyimba must confront the reality of where they stand, address the problems around the club and give their supporters something tangible to believe in. Until then, the rain continues to fall heavily in Aba, and there is little sign that the clouds are clearing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
