The name on every Enyimba fan\u2019s lips right now is Chidera Michael. And rightly so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After his decisive brace in last weekend\u2019s Abia Derby, Chidera has become the face of Enyimba\u2019s survival push. His goals secured maximum points for the People\u2019s Elephant and, more importantly, kept belief alive in this desperate fight to beat the drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His first goal against Abia Warriors was a thing of beauty, a delicate lob over a hesitant goalkeeper to break the deadlock in the second half. His second was different, but just as important. It showed nerve. It showed confidence. For the second game in a row, he stepped up in stoppage time to take a high-pressure penalty. Yes, the first effort was saved, but he stayed alert, reacted quickest, and buried the rebound for the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That brace took his tally to nine league goals this season, just two behind the frontrunners in the NPFL golden boot race. More importantly, those goals have not been empty numbers. They have carried weight. They have shaped results. They have kept Enyimba alive. In truth, one can only wonder where this club would be without Chidera\u2019s interventions in matches that were drifting away from us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He announced himself as an impact player when he came off the bench away at Bayelsa United to help break the deadlock in a 2-0 win. He did it again against Bendel Insurance in a chaotic game where Enyimba twice trailed, only to win 3-2 thanks to Chidera\u2019s late winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And when he was trusted with a starting role, his output did not fade. Instead, he took on the responsibility and delivered. He scored the opener in the 2-1 win over old rivals Enugu Rangers. His brace against Kwara United turned a tense 1-1 contest into a comfortable 3-1 victory. When he was not baking the cake himself, he was adding the icing, as seen in his goal, the third in Enyimba\u2019s 3-0 win over Shooting Stars in Aba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then came his second brace of the campaign against Abia Warriors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The only game in which he scored and Enyimba still came away with nothing was the 2-1 loss to Warri Wolves in Ozoro, when his stoppage-time penalty proved too little, too late to salvage a point. Even in defeat, he was still trying to drag something out of the wreckage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At this point, Chidera has become the man carrying the goal-scoring hopes of Enyimba fans into the final six games of the season. Of course, in times like these, nobody will be too proud about where the goals come from. A finish from anywhere will do. Even an own goal in our favour would be welcome. These are perilous times, and every contribution that pushes us toward safety matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, there is something significant on the line for Chidera personally. One more goal and he joins the class of Enyimba players who have hit double figures in a season, a list that includes names like Mfon Udoh, Victor Mbaoma, Chukwuemeka Obioma, and Chijioke Mbaoma. The difference, though, is that while those men scored in title pushes and trophy-winning campaigns, Chidera\u2019s goals are writing a very different story. His are the goals of survival. The goals of resistance. The goals of a club trying to save itself from humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This weekend now carries even more weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It could define the direction of Enyimba\u2019s survival fight because the four clubs behind us on the table all play at home, while we travel away to one of them, Wikki Tourists. For weeks now, Enyimba have moved in the most frustrating pattern possible, one step forward, one step backward. That cannot continue. What is needed now is two steps forward. Beating a fellow struggler away from home does more than add three points. It weakens a direct rival and strengthens your own escape route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is also unfinished business with Wikki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They came to Aba in the reverse fixture and left with maximum points, one of only three teams to beat Enyimba at home this season. That defeat still stings. It was a game in which Wikki\u2019s then coach, Abdu Maikaba, was praised for his tactical sharpness, while Stanley Eguma had no answers and ultimately paid the price. Now, with both Maikaba and Eguma out of the picture, the rematch presents a fresh tactical duel between Wikki\u2019s Evans Ogenyi and Enyimba\u2019s Emmanuel Deutsch, two men trying to steer troubled teams to safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History offers a little encouragement. The last time Enyimba won away at Wikki Tourists was in 2021, when Tosin Omoyele delivered a starring performance, creating the opener and scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory. The question now is whether Sunday will produce another hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it will be Chidera again. Maybe someone else will finally rise to the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But one thing is certain: only a clear plan, strong execution, and real urgency will be enough to push Enyimba two steps forward and away from the survival fisticuffs gathering behind us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
