The stalemate in Aba on Sunday between Enyimba FC and Barau FC was a setback for the People\u2019s Elephant and their supporters, who had hoped the recent improvement in home results would continue to cushion our poor form on the road. Since parting ways with the previous coaching setup, we have now suffered four consecutive away defeats. Thankfully, three home wins had helped steady the ship \u2014 until the draw against Barau disrupted that balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fear of slipping further down the table is very real. Two consecutive away fixtures against Niger Tornadoes and Nasarawa United await us before our next home game, and our travelling record offers little comfort. In ten away matches this season, Enyimba have managed just one win, three draws, and six losses. That return pales in comparison to our neighbours in Umuahia. Abia Warriors lead the league in away form with five wins from ten trips, collecting 15 points on the road. At times, one cannot help but wonder what they are doing right in Umuahia that needs urgent replication in Aba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coach Ayodele Ayeni is now firmly in charge of technical decisions, and his influence is beginning to show. On Sunday, we saw the introduction of his new signing from Crown FC, Mojeed Adekunle, in the starting lineup. While his coaching philosophy is gradually taking root, Ayeni will ultimately be judged by results \u2014 and by how quickly those results arrive. The position we currently find ourselves in demands pragmatism, not idealism. There is little room for long-term experiments when the immediate task is to salvage a floundering season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NPFL is an unforgiving league. When a team gets dragged into the relegation battle, very few emerge unscathed, regardless of status or history. Seasoned followers of the league understand the warning signs. A team\u2019s true position becomes clear once home and away fixtures are evenly balanced. The current frontrunners have shown strength both at home and on the road. Rivers United, for instance, have dropped five points at home but compensated with 13 away points. Abia Warriors\u2019 impressive 15 away points outweigh the eight points they\u2019ve lost at home through four draws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enyimba currently sit 12th on the table after 21 matches, having played more games at home (11) than away (10). We are just four points above 17th-placed Wikki Tourists, who lead the relegation battlers. This makes the upcoming trips to Minna and Lafia critical. Failure to improve our away form could further complicate an already precarious position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not alarmism \u2014 it is reality. Hoping our way out of trouble will not work. Turning this season around will require collective effort from management, the coaching staff, and the players. While the squad has undergone significant changes, there are still experienced figures who understand what it takes to win in Aba and beyond. Captain Pascal Eze, Ekene Awazie, Uwana Asuquo, and even Stanley Dimgba \u2014 a member of the 2019 title-winning squad \u2014 bring valuable institutional memory to this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Enyimba\u2019s current predicament is largely the result of poor decisions made at the start of the season. The jury is now out on whether the choices made during this restart will be enough to steer the club safely through the remainder of the 2025\/26 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
