Sunday’s meeting between Enyimba F.C. and Plateau United F.C. at the Enyimba International Stadium carried more weight than a typical NPFL fixture. With relegation fears hanging over the People’s Elephant, the priority was simple: secure the points.
Enyimba delivered.
The hosts defeated Plateau United 2–0 in an NPFL Matchday 30 encounter that turned decisively after a first half red card left the visitors with ten men.
Plateau United began the match confidently, attempting to disrupt Enyimba’s rhythm early. The hosts thought they had their first opening in the second minute when Joseph Abiodun broke into the box, but the offside flag halted the move. The early exchanges were scrappy. Passes went astray, tackles flew in, and the tempo struggled to settle.
The key moment arrived in the 21st minute. Midfielder Chinedu Ufere released Michael Chidera with a precise through pass. As Chidera lifted the ball past the advancing Plateau goalkeeper, the keeper handled the ball outside his area in a desperate attempt to stop a certain goal.
The referee immediately produced a red card. Reduced to ten men, Plateau coach Gbenga Ogunbote was forced into an early reshuffle to introduce a replacement goalkeeper. The visitors retreated deep and focused on containment.
Enyimba controlled possession for the remainder of the half but could not convert their advantage. Joel came closest with a free kick that drifted just wide, while Peters headed over from a Ufere cross.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute. Paul Odeh finished confidently to score his first goal for Enyimba and give the hosts the lead. With the extra man and growing pressure from the crowd, Enyimba continued to dictate the match.
Eight minutes later they doubled their advantage. Ufere, already instrumental in the sending off incident, capped his performance with a composed finish in the 63rd minute to make it 2–0.
From that point the match was effectively settled. Coach Emmanuel Detchoua introduced fresh legs and Enyimba controlled the tempo while Plateau, forced to chase with ten men, gradually ran out of energy.
When the final whistle sounded, Enyimba had secured a professional victory. The performance may not have been spectacular, but the result was vital. With the season entering its final stretch, every point matters in Enyimba’s fight to climb away from the relegation zone.
For the People’s Elephant, this was a necessary step in the survival battle.
