A Master’s Degree in Worrying

Good morning All,

Late again? Yes, I know. Sorry. A lot is happening around me, and it has me a little more hands full than I hoped. So I will try to keep this quick and straight to the point. Maybe we should officially make this a “noonish” blog. What do you think?

Anyway, the gaffer has been talking. And talking tough too. In fact, after reading his comments, I paused and thought, “Wait, what is all the fuss for? Why are we panicking? This man sounds like he has got it all under control.”

Here is what he said:

“Enyimba as a team have a target, and as a coach, an ambitious one at that, I equally have a target. And my target should be to win the league or pick a continental ticket, at worst.

Having achieved that in the past, I think I should be looking at something that will surpass my achievement. And that is what the club is also looking to achieve. Remember, we are 9 time champions of the NPFL and 2 time African champions. Anything short of that would not be a good achievement.

So the club is looking at surpassing its previous performance. Of course, we have to achieve that collectively. That is my target.

Before the management sets a target for me, I have already set one for myself, because I am very ambitious, and I feel I have a lot to offer.”

How can you read all that and not feel hopeful?

We fans may have our concerns and rightly so but it sounds like Eguma knows something we do not. He is not here to play safe. He is here to win. And maybe, just maybe, that is all we need to hear right now.

Let me also remind myself, and maybe you too, that Eguma is paid to deliver success. We are not. We are not earning a dime for losing sleep over a disaster that has not even happened, and may never happen.

Now, to be fair, the unease many of us feel is not unfounded. It is rooted in the barage of errors coming from the square pegs in round holes at the top of this club. I should not say “barage” of errors, but you get the point.

Eguma, though, brings longevity and experience. He clearly backs himself. And look, I am not going to pretend I know football or the NPFL better than he does. (If I do, and I am not being paid for it, that is on me.) But I do know football administration better than Kanu, Ekwueme, and the rest. I have a Master’s Degree to prove that.

So let us try, emphasis on try, to raise our expectations for the new season. Trust me, it was hard even typing those words.

That is all I have for today.

See you tomorrow.
