A Decent Start, With Warning Signs

Greetings Blue Family.

2 games in, the season is well and truly underway. For us, 4 points out of six is not a bad return by any stretch most importantly we, at the Elephant Park saw a first glance of some members of the 2025/2026 Enyimba Squad.

From the 2 games we have seen and while it is early days, it looks like we may have a decent goalkeeper in Kelvin Ogunga. Again. 2 games is a small sample size but 2 clean sheets especially one in Kano at the backdrop of intense hostility deserves commendation. Perhaps we do now have a decent replacement for Ani Ozoemena. Maybe.

Or maybe not. I am not one who likes to cry wolf but Ogunga must, of all he is currently learning, learn how to keep his cool in goal. Watching the highlights from the Tornadoes game, it was nothing short of a miracle that we kept a clean sheet in that game. Before the 5th minute goal by Abiodun, Ogunga had gifted the visitors two chances that a more clinical frontline may have capitalized from.

It got worse as the game wore on. Late in the second half, he rushed out to make a save. He missed and it took a goalline clearance to deny Tornadoes an equalizer. A goalkeeper is most times at the mercy of his defence and while I acknowledge the saves he made on the day, the story may have been different.

At the opposite goal post, it was a similar kind of problem. We had chance after chance to nail it and double our lead but we couldnt take any. A 1-0 lead in the League is precarious and despite the fact that there was a pledge by the special guest of honor to reward a goal for N1million, we still couldn’t get that second goal.

It brings back memories of last season’s goal scoring travails. The stretch of home games where we couldn’t find the all important touch infront of goal. Again, its early days but it will help all concerned to nip these issues in the bud this early so they dont grow into a monster in the long run.

The other observation is the number of last season’s regulars that are painfully invisible. I understand we have sold tonnes of players and there’s only a few left but even the ones left cannot get into the starting XI? Perhaps there are fitness issues and it being a long season, everyone will surely get their taste of some action.

Early days. Probably Much Ado About Nothing.

Back tomorrow
