This Enyimba Rot is Squarely on Kanu and Ekwueme

Good morning All.

The weekend is gone and the calamity that Enyimba served up felt almost watered down by the disappointment of the Super Eagles. In case you are the only one in Israel who does not know, Nigeria will be sitting out the World Cup in June. That is national heartbreak on its own, but here at home, we have our own problems. Very big problems as well.

Yesterday, the club finally decided they had seen enough of the Eguma experiment and chose to fire the gaffer along with his two assistants.

For me, Eguma should never have been allowed to resume this new season. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see from last season that he was clearly out of his depth. There was no comparison between him and Yema. Yema had the problems any young coach would suffer with an abysmal recruitment, but somehow, Ekwueme decided Eguma was the answer.

It did not take long for reality to show its face. A few moons into Eguma’s reign, the lifeless, bland, drab football became evident for all to see. It got worse when, by the end of the season, Yema’s record had dwarfed that of the “experienced” Eguma who was sold to us as a master tactician. We hollered. We warned. But Kanu and his team at Enyimba’s helm paid deaf ears.

All that, of course, is history. The bigger problem now is how Ekwueme and his Sporting Group have no contingency plan for this club. At the end of last season, the remaining quality we had was allowed to walk away. In return, rookies and failed players were quickly handed jersey numbers.

Again, it looks like misjudgment — but look closer and you will see a pattern. This is the kind of recruitment you see at clubs with zero ambition. Kanu’s Enyimba that promised so much has delivered so little. It is embarrassing.

Some of us have consistently held them accountable, and their response? Deploy their social media defenders to quickly write praise-singing articles, gaslighting fans and urging everyone to “support the process.” But the failure can no longer be hidden. Everyone can see what a mess this entire exercise has been.

And to make matters worse, we are exactly where we feared we would be. Enyimba have dropped more home points than any other team in the league. On that basis alone, we cannot even dream of winning the title. That leaves us with Continental places. But again, the big question: Is Ekwueme’s recruitment good enough to get us there? We have not seen anything to inspire belief.

We are right where haphazard and incompetent planning wants us to be.

Thank you, Kanu and Ekwueme. And yes — shame on you both.

EnyimbaEnyi.
