Good day Everyone
There is a story of two men who were praying for rain. One decided to go prepare his field while waiting while the other simply sat at his window. Their prayers were answered. Albeit, it profited one ahead of the other. Pray and hope all you want but we must also stay prepared.
Few days ago, I stumbled on a video of some Oga from Startimes explaining how and why they were pulling out of the TV Deal for the League. Interestingly, although most of last weekend’s fixtures were on accessible, this weekend there won’t be any. Action from the ten venues will be at the mercy of the respective clubs.
If you ask the big suits of the League, they will tell you they want the League to grow and they want the CHAN Eagles to win the CHAN. They want people to take the League seriously whereas they have displayed time and time again that all they are doing is devoid of direction and know-how.
It is a shame that our League, with the abundance of football talent in it, cannot be viewed on a bigger platform. One time, DSTV was the broadcast partner. And while they didn’t have all matches on TV per weekend, you could see how the Hon Nduka Irabor led LMC had everyone buzzing about the League. Things really looked on the Up.
Fast forward, just about a decade later, we are worse than we ever were. Directionless leadership is the same problem we have at different institutions in Nigeria. From the Presidency to the various little groups and establishments. Everyone wants to be the boss calling the shots, very few have earned it.
When we were much younger, we felt that Nigeria had all it takes to win the world cup. Just like the ongoing world cup qualifiers this weekend. Sooner than later, the truth hits because as show time approaches, our pants are pulled down. In the most humbling way.
There is an insane gap between our potential and our reality. No Nigerian believes South Africa is better talented than we are. But their League is thriving and we have watched a team like Mamelodi Sundowns move from newbies to a strong house in African football, while raking much more revenue than could have been imagined. People were doing more than offering prayers.
If you build it, they will come. If we build our league and standardize our operations, we will have a League that is the envy of the rest of the Continent and possibly beyond. Its something we know we can do, question is, will we?
