Enyimba’s Continental Dreams Take a Hit After Loss to Sunshine

Enyimba FC suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sunshine Stars in their Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 33 fixture at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode.

Elmer Arunta’s early goal gave Sunshine Stars the lead, but Christian Nnaji’s equalizer for Enyimba FC levelled the scores temporarily. However, Waheed Adebayo’s strike in the second half secured a crucial win for the Owena Whales.

“We gave it our all against a big team like Enyimba FC,” Sunshine Stars’ coach Akinfolarin Bobola said, acknowledging Enyimba’s reputation. “This win is a relief and a boost for us. We still have work to do, especially on our physical strength.”

Striker Elmer Arunta praised Enyimba’s quality, saying, “Playing against a team like Enyimba FC is always tough. We knew we had to be focused, and I’m glad we managed to stay that way and get the win. This is a big morale booster for us.”

Sunshine Team manager Tokunbo Akinyelure added, “We showed real fighting spirit today. This win is not just for us, but for the fans who supported us. We appreciate the energy and backing from the crowd.”

The defeat leaves Enyimba FC in 9th place with 46 points, 7 points behind Abia Warriors, who occupy the final continental qualification spot. Despite the setback, Enyimba FC will focus on their upcoming Presidential FA Cup round of 16 match against Abakiliki FC in Enugu this Wednesday.
