Match Preview: A Salah-worthy Performance in Ikenne?

Good morning!

Yesterday was a break—a little story time before the real action kicks off today in Ikenne, where we’ve already touched down ahead of our final game before the Eid El Fitr holidays. If we’re to make this trip worthwhile, we’ll need a Salah-esque performance before Salah itself.

A match against Remo Stars these days is always a battle. Let’s not forget—they were the only team to beat us at home last season, and we’ve struggled to snatch maximum points from them. Our last three trips to Ikenne? Three 1-0 defeats. And looking at our current away form—seven defeats in 15 matches—versus Remo’s near-impeccable home record—14 wins and a draw in 15 games—you’d easily agree the odds aren’t in our favour.

But football is played on the pitch, not the stats sheet.

Eguma will be relieved to have a few players back. Obot was on the bench against Bayelsa, while Chikamso, Isah, and Nweke all started. Peter Afolayan is available again, but Brown Ideye and Ihemekwele were absent, alongside Uwana Asuquo and Eze Ekwutoziem, whose injuries have clearly disrupted the team’s balance.

Well, Christian Nnaji has had more than enough chances to stake his claim, but it’s starting to look like the boots left behind by the “not-so-lethal” Ifeanyi Ihemekwele might still be too big for him. And then there’s Junior Lokosa—whose return to the NPFL after getting relegated with Sporting Lagos hasn’t exactly been the redemption story we hoped for.

One thing is certain—if we want to thrive today, we must score goals. And not just one, but more than one.

Back in the squad and speaking to the club’s media, Peter Afolayan underlined the squad’s mentality:

“Our game against Remo Stars is an important one. We are here to give our best and secure the 3 points. I believe that if we work collectively, we will achieve our aim.”

Here’s a little confidence booster.

At least, hitting 14 points on the road would do wonders for morale—even if our name no longer strikes fear the way it once did.

Kickoff is at 4 PM. Let’s see how it goes.

Back tomorrow.
