Enyimba 1 Bayelsa 1: Another Home Slip Leaves Questions

Good Morning!

It’s a Monday, the morning after, and the feeling is all too familiar. Once again, when we needed something big from a home game against Bayelsa United, it didn’t come. Just like last season.

Under a cloudy Aba sky with a light drizzle setting the scene, we played out a frustrating 1-1 draw against the 14th-placed visitors. That result extended our unbeaten run to six matches across all competitions, but let’s be honest—two league wins in our last five games (despite playing three of those at home) isn’t the kind of form we need. Feels like we’re slipping back into that dreaded draw era, doesn’t it?

Eguma’s 15th league game in charge saw Ozoemena start in goal, with Chikamso and Gabriel holding the center of defense flanked by Obichere and Ogberahwe. Ufere, Isah, and Nweke marshaled the midfield, while Atule and Awazie supported Nnaji in attack. Brown Ideye and Fatai Abdullahi were nowhere to be found in the squad, while Lokosa, Obot, Mujeeb, Nnachi, Ebube, Quadri, Zali, Akanni, and Umeh made up the bench.

We started fast. Seventh minute—Awazie scores his fifth of the season. Eighth minute—Bayelsa United hit back. Ifeanyi Ogba, given acres of space, curled in a beauty from 20 yards. No Bayelsa United fans in the stands, but the goal still earned applause from all corners. And just like that, the game settled into a less-than-enthusiastic stalemate.

There were a couple of penalty shouts, but let’s be real—if you dominate a game properly, you don’t need penalties to win. We simply weren’t at our best. Lethargic. Flat. Uninspiring. The result? Two more points dropped at home.

At full-time, Eguma’s frustration was as clear as those in the stands who had expected better. There’s been so much talk about motivation in the squad, but a ₦1,000,000 cash reward for the draw against Ikorodu City clearly didn’t shake things up enough. Maybe we have been expecting a symphony from a rookie orchestra?

Next up? Remo Stars. Will it hold? Will the missing goalkeepers be back? Do we dare expect something from Ikenne? Well, let’s wait and see.

Back tomorrow.

Enyimba Enyi!
