“Making It” as a Professional Footballer.

Most times when I’m late to post and I’m trying to quickly roll out one. I’m often tempted to state that “It’s a Quick/Short blog”. Most times I’m ranting on and on and the Quick/Short post gets longer than a short post and I’ll have to go back to my first paragraph to delete that initial notice. I hope that’s not the case today.

Two days ago, I had written about seeking green pastures and the drive for players to want to move abroad or some other footballing scene in other to “blow”. I’m not ignoring the intense pressure career footballers face- from family, friends and everyone who had supported their journey along the way.

So for many, the need to make it is so intense and their eyes are set on that move abroad. For most of them, anywhere else but Nigeria and they are on board. With little research about the destination and no sooner had they arrived than reality hits. They take whatever new challenges they meet and add it to the initial pressure.

I once spoke with a “Professional” Footballer in a country whose foremost problem was feeding and then accomodation. Apparently, the connect who got him to this country sold him a lie. The said club was only offering a trial and he was told they were making an expense paid trip to sign him.

Some players need to be seen over a period of time before the club makes a decision about them. Some others, although the technical crew has seen them in action, still need as much as 6 months to acclaimatize. Unfortunately some of these clubs may not even have such patience.

Its just akin to what happened with Joseph Atule this season. Clearly, he has blossomed since Coach Yema left. The gaffer made a judgment call on him that proved to be incorrect. And since he left, Atule is playing like a man unshackled.

While there may be external issues that could pose a problem for the Professional Footballer, there should be some non negotiables. Your personal attitude in and toward training, commitment to drills, relationship with others can quickly stand you out or even buy you a little more time if you aren’t impressing the coaches as quickly.

Again, you need divine help to succeed. To know the right move and when. And to have a favor-lit showing at your trials/auditioning. Meanwhile, why would a player who is at trials at a foreign club, decide to steal some fine boots he saw in the locker room?

This is no quick/short post. I’ve done it again. SMH.

See you tomorrow and Happy Belated Birthday to the Gaffer. And Healing Streams with Pastor Chris starts today. You should join us.
