It’s Match Day folks! One of the biggest games in the African continent this weekend goes down in Uyo today. It’s a CAF Confederation Cup group stage game but anywhere in the continent that an Enyimba vs Zamalek game is mentioned, we know what goes into the conversation.
These are two giants; Nigeria’s biggest and most successful club against one of Africa’s finest teams and the competition’s defending champions. What else to say? The stakes are also there to be claimed as it is early days in the group stage.
Both teams endured contrasting fortunes on Match Day 1 – Enyimba going down 0-2 at Zamalek’s local rivals Al Masry while the White Knights dispatched group’s darkhorses Black Bulls in a similar scoreline. Will this Elephant set of 2024 live up to the name on Sunday?
Enyimba go into Sunday’s clash with Zamalek at the back of a pensive run of form, having won just one of their last nine games in all competitions, drawing six of those. One thing is evident in those, like we’ve mentioned on here; the team’s poor marksmanship.
The People’s Elephant under Yemi Olanrewaju have dominated games and sometimes put up fascinating football stuff but goalscoring has been their Achilles heel. Who then hath believed our report (of good football) if a team fail to score goals or win games?
On Sunday, they go into the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo in search of their first goal in continental football this season (3 games, 0 goal) and also a win over the tournament’s favourites. Achieving this twin task can change the team’s fortunes remarkably but the million dollar question remains: where will the goal(s) come from?
Well, today will be a very good day for a Raphael Boumsong to come to the rescue. You don’t know who that is? Well, Boumsong was an Enyimba striker who saved the club against Smouha SC from Egypt on a day where the goals simply failed to come. Hardly one that could go down as an Enyimba Legend but he was a Moses that saved the chosen people from certain Egyptians on March 15, 2015.
Well then, over to you, Enyimba and Raphael Boumsong (whoever that is) – let’s get those 3 points.
