Abia Derby Preview: Enyimba vs Abia Warriors

Good Morning!

It’s Derby Day in Abia—and this one feels a little different.

We take on our state rivals Abia Warriors, a team that until recently was content with mid-table obscurity, but now walks with a spring in its step, dreaming of glory. Credit to them, they’ve dared to dream. But if we’re being honest, it’s a bit unsettling watching them evolve while we seem stuck in a loop of highs and lows.

When you look at the structure, it almost feels like they hired the experts and we hired the apprentices. Their path seems clearer, more determined. Ours? Still a work-in-progress—or maybe a drama series with too many plot twists. Yet, even with all that, there’s still this unshakable feeling that we’re the bigger club. History, pedigree, fan base—we carry more weight. That’s why this fixture is not just another league match. It’s a battle for pride.

Strangely, it’s not us in the better position pushing for a continental spot. It’s them. And that stings. But football is full of twists, and this derby could be our spark.

Under Imama Amapakabo, Abia Warriors have quietly become a tough side. Adejoh Ojonugwa brings fire in midfield, while their attacking trio—Sunday Megwo, Paul Samson, and Antoine “Anthony Ijoma” De Souza—is enough to give any defense a sleepless night. Our backline must be alert, organized, and aggressive. Chikamso will need a solid partner, and Ani Ozoemena has to be sharp and ready from minute one.

Unfortunately, we’re still without three key players due to injury, but let’s hope those who are back bring their A-game. There’s no room for passengers today.

Now, here’s the real twist: if we believe we can win the President Federation Cup—just five games away—then maybe, just maybe, this match isn’t do-or-die. After all, Abia Warriors aren’t in the competition, and this might be their only shot at a continental ticket. But we’re Enyimba. We don’t throw games away. Not to rivals. Not ever.

It would be a shame to lose today and then fall short in the cup too. A good Enyimba season must have a continental finish. We can still make that happen.

Kickoff is 5:30pm. Fingers crossed the floodlights don’t let us down… again.

Back tomorrow.
