The Egyptians you see today…Match Preview Zamalek v Enyimba

Good morning, Enyimba family!

It’s Matchday! Our fourth outing of the year and our first away from any kind of home. Cairo is buzzing, and so are we as we prepare to take on Zamalek in what feels like the ultimate “now or never” fixture of our CAF Confederations Cup campaign.

Let’s be honest: most people—including yours truly—are calling this our swan song on the continent this season. For us to advance, we need a win there in Cairo and a little magic in Ismailia. Not exactly the kind of odds that make you rush to the betting table. But hey, as long as the math says it’s possible, I’ll allow myself a glimmer of faith.

Zamalek, meanwhile, are sitting pretty as group winners, sporting a smug 11 points from 15. With five points over Al Masry in second and a comfortable cushion over us, they could field their U-12s and still sleep soundly tonight. Historically, our meetings with them have been one-sided: three games, zero wins for us, and only two goals to show for 270 minutes of football. Oh, and let’s not forget, Egypt isn’t exactly our happy hunting ground. In fact, we’ve yet to grab even a single point there. Gloomy much?

But, as true Enyimba, we thrive on defying the odds—or at least scaring them a little. Everyone in camp is buzzing with optimism, and even I can’t help but let a flicker of hope creep in. It’s time to channel the spirit of Abdul Maikaba and “commit suicide and come back alive.” Sounds insane? Maybe. But if there’s ever been a night for miracles, this is it.

Whatever happens today, we’re either making history or making peace with a very hard exit. And if that exit comes, let’s just say the post-mortem won’t be pretty—nobody will escape the microscope.

For now, though, it’s all about giving our hearts to this game, chasing that flickering light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, and maybe—just maybe—rewriting some history in Cairo.

Let’s do this.

Enyimba Enyi!
