Not sure how to start today’s blog. Mornings like this are the most difficult in attempting to put emotions into words. The Oriental Derby against Rangers ended in a goalless draw. For us, our winless run continue and if you’re looking for lemonades or such consolations, our unbeaten run too.
We looked like we were up for it from the start and Ifeanyi Ihemekwele had a chance to put us ahead. He fluffed the opportunity. Chance after chance and the pressure pendulum moving from us to them and back with us, there was no breakthrough. It was same into the interval with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
The second period saw more urgency from us and for all the talk about them, I really did expect more from Rangers. Truth is, they seemed content to just get the point. Then came the moment in the dying embers of the game when we thought we had scored and the officials thought otherwise.
I have seen the video. Unless of course, I need a new pair of glasses but the goal was perfectly OK. There are two incidents where we had the ball in the net and while i can understand the one where the played can be adjudged to being marginally offside, I cannot for the life of me understand what was wrong with the other one.
The ball was floated in from a set piece. There was an attempted clearance of the goal bound header. It bounced off a blue shirt and flew into the goal. And the officials thought otherwise and got it chalked off. I’ll hands off and profusely apologize if I saw another video proving it was a legitimate call. But I’ve seen two videos and my stance is same.
However, it is otherwise, and we need to hand those responsible what they deserve. I mean if teams have to get points unfairly, why do we have a League? Why not sit in your office and write a memo to all of Nigeria’s football stakeholders – list the years from 2023 to 2050 and award all League titles to your beloved Rangers?
Nigeria’s Football, like every other facet of the country is at an all time low? People who promised positive changes are caught up in the same web that has plagued the system for years. I don’t dismiss that we have a goalscoring problem. But what can’t be tolerated is engineering results to suit your purpose. What a painfully sad place to be.
We have to pick ourselves up and focus on Zamalek for Sunday. More on that in the days ahead.
Back tomorrow.
