It’s Matchday, dear Elephants!
The day the Lord has made, and oh yes, we will rejoice and be glad in it. Tuesdays are rarely this glorious, but when it’s derby day—the Real Oriental Derby, the biggest and only authentic rivalry in the NPFL—you know it’s a day to remember. The rest? Wannabe derbies. Let’s call it as it is.
Today, we welcome our “brothers” from Obiagu, the Flying Antelopes, Enugu Rangers—or should we say Grounded Antelopes? (Humility aside, we’re the only international side in the NPFL, so forgive us for the subtle flex.) The 4 PM kickoff at the Elephant Park is not just a match; it’s history in the making. Every one of our 26 meetings has left memories etched into our hearts.
Statistically, it’s not even a contest. We’ve triumphed in 12 encounters, leaving the other 14 evenly split between shared points and their occasional flukes. Class, as they say, is permanent, and class is what Enyimba represents—on the pitch, in the trophy cabinet, and everywhere in between.
However, we’re not blind to our form. While unbeaten in the country since November, it’s time to stop flirting with draws and start grabbing wins like they owe us money. Fun fact: Last time we met, Kalu Nweke, now one of our own, scored for them. Clearly, he saw the light, switched allegiance, and today, he’ll be looking to show his former employers just how much they miss his brilliance.
Rangers won’t roll over, though. Their trio of Saviour Isaac, Kazeem Ogunleye, and Godwin Obaje is a menace to any defence, with Ogunleye pulling the strings from deep. Our midfield generals—whether it’s Fatai Abdullahi or the prodigious Daniel Daga—need to be on high alert. But let’s not forget our strength: possession football. While Ilechukwu might have his antelopes chasing shadows, Yema’s calm, calculated style ensures we expect to dictate the game.
This is also a massive opportunity for Ani Ozoemena to solidify his CHAN credentials. A standout performance today will make it hard for anyone to argue against his spot in the national team. Add that to Imo Obot’s impressive form, and we’ve got ourselves a solid core to brag about.
As fans, let’s show Rangers’ faithful what true rivalry looks like. Cheer passionately, but don’t forget to flash a brotherly smile after we’ve schooled them. Maybe a warm handshake and a pat on the back as the more accomplished younger sibling would do for their less fortunate elder. Don’t forget—tickets are easier than ever to grab online. Thanks to the Abia State Government for making it seamless.
Tonight’s menu is simple: roasted antelope. Let’s feast!
