Enyimba FC qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, after a hard-fought 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Etoile Filante, in Uyo. The People’s Elephants started strongly, creating early chances. Daga’s second-minute free kick didn’t trouble Mare, while Atule missed a flick-on from Uwana’s long throw in the sixth minute.

Enyimba dominated possession but failed to register a shot on target in the first 30 minutes. Clinton Jephtah nearly scored in the 29th minute, beating his markers in the box and shooting into the side net with Mare at his mercy. Ismail Sarki squandered Enyimba’s best chance in the 45th minute, failing to beat Mare in a one-on-one situation after receiving a fine pass from Atule.

Coach Yemi Olanrewaju introduced Alade Balogun and Akanni Elijah to boost the attack, creating more chances, but Mare thwarted their efforts. Moses Adikwu missed a golden opportunity in the 60th minute, shooting inches wide after Uwana’s fine pass. Substitute Ifeanyi Ihemekwele headed narrowly off target in the 74th minute.

Nathaniel Asibe made a heroic last-minute save, denying Honore Justin Ye. The game went to penalties, and Enyimba held their nerves, converting three spot kicks, with Asibe making a stunning save.

The team will now focus on their second NPFL game, hosting Lobi Stars in Aba on Wednesday.
