Enyimba 2-0 MFM: New Season and off to a flier

Good morning Guys.

We have our season off to a flier having dismantled, dismissed, distorted, destroyed MFM in Aba on Sunday. I know some of you will wanna pick up on the lines I used above and try to turn this into more than it was planned to be. We just beat them 2-0, that’s all I’m trying to say in French above.

I was keen on seeing how we lined up. We handed debuts to Dare Olatunji and Chinedu Udechukwu. Then there was Thomas Zenke who was on a second missionary journey to Enyimba. The other signings Chukwuka Onuwa, Stanley Okorom and Bright Emmanuel had to settle for the bench.

The early season fixture could bring some jittery for even the biggest teams and we are no strangers to such happenings. I remember in our title winning season, we kicked off that season with a goalless draw with Akwa United in Aba. So an early goal was clearly what the doctor ordered.

Nasiru Sani, playing in that Left Back role originally occupied by Ikouwem Utin, hurled a trademark long throw into the area. The visitors went after the big striker Udechukwu ignoring the lurking Nelson Ogbonnaya. “Thank you very much”, he muttered under his breath and helped himself to a goal. His first for the club. Our first for the season. The first League goal scored from all the centers.

They waited the second half to double the tally. Andrew Abalogu found Abdulrahman Bashir with his freekick and our number 8 made no mistakes. 2-0 to the good guys. That second goal was specially pleasant especially knowing we had developed a bad habit of sitting on 1-0 leads. Credit to us, we could have gotten more but for wayward finishes.

I particularly am happy for Bashir and I know this will be a big big season for him. He hasn’t really given us a full season here in Aba, no thanks to his injury travails recently. I do pray though, that this is the season he really gets a good goal’s harvest.

There was even time for Onuwa to eat up some Aba love. The diminutive midfielder saw some action later in the second half when Dimgba was withdrawn and he created a few chances, clearly doing his reputation among the Aba faithful a world of good. Zenke and Chukwude both failed to convert.

I know it’s only MFM, it’s only a home game which should mean a routine win but think about Plateau United and Akwa United who both failed to pick wins at home. This is going to be a quick season and every 3 points on the board right now will be greatly treasured. Thankfully we got ours.

One game, two goals, three points. Onto the midweek.

That’s all I can dish out today. Let’s do this again tomorrow.
