Continental football is back, let’s watch how this opens up

Good morning,

It is a matchday in the NPFL, a matchday that concerns us but we are not getting involved with hostilities until after over 48 hours because our would be opponents are preparing for their first ever champions league match. We know how it feels, it is just so Enyimba to have continental fixtures like this.

Our valentine’s day/ash Wednesday visitors, Plateau United will have Cameroonian visitors today to keep them busy, and it’s no news that we were drawn bye for this first preliminary matches.

Can you still remember who we are likely to meet, should any of them qualify? Don’t think again, We will be meeting the winners between Energie Sports of Benin(not the city) and Haifa of Guinea. Teams we can beat to move to the next round. In the two clubs’ first meeting played yesterday, Energie Sports narrowly edged out Haifa 1-0. A typical NPFL result. Haifa still stands a chance to overturn it when they meet in the return leg in a fortnight.

With the tournament group stages increased to accommodate 8 more clubs since last season, there will definitely be no excuse not to make the group stages. Making the group stages should just be minimum target, we should get farther than that. The CAF Confederation Cup tournament should be used to send a message to the continent, that we can still do the same things we did about 15 years ago. We cannot be drawn bye and get being told goodbye before we even started.

We may not have the squad that conquered Africa anymore but everyone who wears our badge on his chest is capable of bringing back the glory days. Aigbogun 2.0 should know that Enyimba isn’t just comfortable with league success. We love success on all fronts!

We wish Plateau United, MFM and Akwa United luck as they tackle their continental opponents today. Plateau and MFM are debutants in the continent. We hope our league is preparation enough for them.

Back tomorrow.
