Match Preview: Enyimba vs MFM

Morning all. It’s another Match day with MFM the newest visitors to Calabar. This blog seems to have reverted to what it used to be like in its early days. Blogging only on Match Days and for game reviews. It’s a sad place for us at the moment but I believe we will get back to business as usual in no distant time.

MFM have made a lightening start to their second season in top flight. They look like they are here to stay and only a couple of days ago, they were on the global football map thanks to that strike that Etim Matthew would never want to see a third time. Sikiru Olatunbosu won CNN’s goal of the week and more recent rumors are that clubs are out for him. All the best son.

They do play good football undoubtedly and this afternoon they have an opportunity to trot their stuff with the whole country watching. I’m looking forward to that one. This fixture last season was our last home fixture and it was the last point we got in that heart-rending season. It was also a fixture that helped their relegation cause- that point and some magic in Jos did the business and they survived.

For us, that weekend defeat in Kano must have hurt a great deal. I mean to the players and the fans. We did show some fight. The team did play well no doubt but it’s the goals and the points that matter. We pushed for an equalizer and we were caught out, punished by Pillars and our fate was sealed. This fixture must be about bouncing back from that disappointment and getting back to winning ways.

It is a game where we have to rise to the occasion because we are currently on a 4 game winless run. Back to back games on TV means fans who have decried the inability to see the team play now have that chance and they can access the team’s quality. For the players and the management, there’s no hiding place. This squad really needs to show that the work believed to be ongoing is actually for real.

On choice of personnel, we would probably go with our regular 4-4-2 formation and while it is not a system of play I really like, whatever system that produces victory for us is more than welcome. It would also be interesting to see who lines up in attack. Perhaps the Chukwude + Mustapha combo we saw in Kano or maybe one of the big guys- Obiozor/Gata gets the nod. It would be interesting to see what the gaffer thinks.

Its live on Supersport and that means you don’t need any updates. However we are leaving the door open for a guest blog post tomorrow from anyone who actually seea the game. You know our feedback email address – That’s your lot this morning and all the best to the lads.

Back tomorrow

  1. I think Ogunbote is making the same mistake Aigbogun made last season. By now he should have a winning eleven and stick to it, rather than keep making four to five changes every other match.During the days of Ikhana, one could easily predict the starting line-up. You keep leaving your top scorers on the bench or out of the match day squad, and keep rotating the squad as if you are doing pre-season. That’s not how to be champions.
