Bonjour mes amis, comment allez-vous aujourd’hui? Fret not Gentlemen, this isn’t ThatAsecMimosasFan, it’s only a little boring doing the usual ‘Good Morning All’ everyday. So the ‘tongues’ above is simply- Good morning my friends, how are you doing today? To that of course, you can reply under your breath, it’s received.
You know how excited we are on the blog when there’s good news to share. There most certainly is some good news and we can’t wait, so let’s get down to it. It’s not on the club’s official channels but the club has secured the services of Ghana International Goalkeeper, Abdul Fatau Dauda from Ghanaian club Ashanti Gold and according to reports he’s on a two year deal.
He comes bagging a wealth of experience having 25 caps with the Ghanaian National team and stints at Orlando Pirates and Chippa United. He was the National team Goalkeeper at the 2013 Nations Cup and at 31 he looks like he’s in his prime as a goalkeeper. There was some post somewhere on the internet where it was up for some debate as to whether Avram Grant should stick with him or not. Not doubting his quality you know but coaches have preferred choices in between the sticks.
What this means of course is that Afelokhai and Achimegwu would have quality competition in goal for us. Looking at it, what we have currently in goal looks better than what we had last season. Femi Thomas and Moses Ocheje and Joshua Enaholo all vied for that top spot with Afelokhai last year but we always knew who was first choice. Right now, you have a Ghanaian International in the mix and that should get the guys on their toes knowing there a more than capable deputy who can man the sticks and in fact displace them if needs be.
We did have a few games last season where goalkeeping blunders cost us. Quite a number of them actually including the Champions League games. The Zamalek at home for instance, the goal with which they beat us in Port Harcourt could have been avoided with better goalkeeping and better communication between the defenders and the goalkeeper. The home draw to Lobi Stars and the defeat to Sundowns in South Africa among others. So with this, I think it’s quality cover in between the sticks.
Then again, there’s also another lad from Ghana too who’s with us on trial. He’s left-footed. A left back, I hear, and with the deficiency we currently have there, the club could see this as a permanent problem to that Aloma-sized hole at Left Back. Let’s hope he’s good enough quality for the position, in which case we can rest assured our defence is now looking good.
I know we’ve gone thru the ‘summer’ lamenting player exits and the guys we’ve lost to other clubs but this particular signing is some massive statement of intent from the club. Yes, I know just a goalkeeper isn’t the only signing that means all is now fine and good overnight but the singular fact that we can still attract big players in the Continent, tells that we are right there with the very top guys and that’s a good thing.
There is of course the question of the team bonding well and understanding themselves with the number of new players we have added but that can be dealt with. I believe this camp in Calabar should do a lot by way of breeding concord and understanding within the team. Sounding optimistic, yea but what else can a fan do, if not to believe that everything will be alright again?
Just in case you’ve not heard, Mfon Udoh is the new Enyimba captain. Who saw that coming? More on that tomorrow.
Great day everyone
