Gritty Enyimba get a point in Lagos

Good morning Guys.

We have just refused to get beaten. Happy times!

Our trip to Lagos to face the Church boys of MFM was fruitful as we head back home with a point. There were crossbars to the rescue, agile goalkeepers, stout defending but sadly, no goals and we head back a bit happier of the two sides.

The gaffer opted for the eleven below: Afelokhai, @DontDareOjo, Aloma, @kesteroficial30, Thankgod, @udoji_chinedu, Osadiaye, Anaezemba, @mosky06, @iamzeezaga, Leonard.

OK, in plain English, Afelokhai, Ojo, Aloma, Kester, Ikeh, Udoji, Osadiaye, Anaezemba, Ibenegbu, Azeez, Leonard. Mfon Udoh and Kamal were on the bench as were Peter Onyekachi and goalkeeper Moses Ocheje.

Playing MFM at the Agege Stadium is by no means an easy feat and we were under the cosh as early as the game started. In fact one of the first updates on the @EnyimbaEnyi Twitter (handled by @Ajibel) suggested that we almost gave away a penalty. Next they tried to lob the keeper but the effort came off the woodwork. I think we went to the other end and hit the woodwork too.

The game plan was simple, stay compact. Stay disciplined. Don’t make any stupid errors and as long as ‘Safe hands’ Theo is in between the sticks, we will be just fine. By Half-time, things were safe and intact even though we were barely threatening them. It did remind me of our game in Ibadan last season against Shooting Stars.

The second half was no different and while one respected journalist was busy tweeting that MFM is holding Enyimba goalless at the Agege Stadium, some other group was tweeting, Enyimba is lucky not to be behind here. Did any of that matter? Not at all. We were holding off nicely and with a clean sheet, there was no cause for alarm.

Then Mr Aigbogun brought on Mfon Udoh for Joseph Osadiaye who I learnt was far away from happy about the substitution. Nzube got sent off after receiving his second yellow card, this time for simulation. Mfon had two quick chances late in the game but he was unable to beat their goalkeeper. It would have been good to take all three points but wouldn’t it be unfair especially seeing how well they pegged us back in the first half.

At the end we settled for a draw and a point which I feel is just about OK. On the table, we rather than ascend, we hop down to 12th with the rest of our new neighbors, teams who won their games yesterday.

It is necessary however that we offer the team the accolades it deserves for the point earned yesterday. Such displays not only help you get something away from home but it strengthens your belief and confidence in your teammates. All good for the progress of the team.

Good result. Good performance. Good point earned.

Back tomorrow.

PS. Thank you Ikenna Okey for the pictures. You are super amazing.

  1. Enyimba needs to work on counter attacking play. They play too deep. And the strikers need awakening it’s almost a year I heard Enyimba scored four or five times in an NPFL Game.
