Good morning Guys.
Very quick Saturday roundup for you.
The CAF Champions League is firmly behind us right now as we move our attention to the League. The past two days has seen us celebrate and critically review the highs and lows of that memorable night in Sousse but we can’t do that forever especially with other things in our way.
The LMC Chairman referred to us yesterday as the League’s heroes and knowing we don’t play again in the Continent for at least a month from here onwards we are solely on our own, trying to get our League issues sorted out.
It begins tomorrow in Uyo as we host the weekend’s second night game. Initially, flight issues meant the club had presented an inability to play that game but the League organizers stepped in with this statement yesterday.
The match in AKWA IBOM between AKWA Utd and Enyimba is still holding as scheduled on Sunday, all being equal and it would still be live on TV – Super Sport…. However, the timing for the match has been shifted by 3 hours from 4pm to 7PM SUNDAY NIGHT 24.04,2016. And to make things easy for our heroes Enyimba, LMC has concluded arrangements to fly the team directly to UYO on Saturday morning as soon as they arrive Lagos via Air Maroc. So Enyimba would have more than 30hrs rest in Uyo before the match on Sunday 7pm….. Hopefully all would work out as planned….
We hope so too. So rather than bury our heads in the ground, Ostrich style, hoping to not let League issues bother us, it’s about time we got on the dance floor and try to get into the groove of the season.
To be honest, we have only managed a whiff this season in the League, showing close to nothing by way of signs that we are the defending Champions. We are seated nicely in Relegation places with loads of catch up games to play, we have a created immense pressure for ourselves especially seeing how other teams have fared so far.
Our League stat doesn’t look good. Someone recounted the other day how that we like Kadiri Ikhana’s Shooting Stars have not picked so much as an office pin away from home. This blog has offered some defence for the losses in Enugu and in Akure and even in Katsina. The one in Port Harcourt came too soon for an Enyimba side yet to identify who would lead the line for them. But tomorrow night presents this team a chance to show their true colours with the whole country watching.
Akwa United themselves would relish the challenge, meaning that we must be up for it. (More on that in tomorrow’s blog).
Truth is, there are a number of decent looking teams in the Championship this year. Aside just playing well home and away, some play some very scintillating football. We saw Rangers tear apart Nasarawa United with their free flowing attacking football. Truth is, with more and more Nigerians focused on the league right now, the quality of the football is also as vital to these new fans as the results being posted.
But what an awesome crowd we saw in Enugu last night, it reminded me of the numbers that saw us beat them 2-1 right on the grounds last year. We also pray work resumes at our home ground soonish. How our fans have missed this team.
Finally for today, someone whispered to my ears something really scary last night. He said, with the way teams are performing this season, Enyimba must start picking points away from home, otherwise if they don’t win the CAF Champions League thus season, then they will not be in the competition next season as just home wins and away defeats can only guarantee a midtable finish. It was scary but very very true.
