Well, another match day is upon us.
An opportunity to get the midweek loss out of our system. Bayelsa United come to town and nothing but three points is acceptable. The reverse fixture was also one to forget. We went to their ‘adopted’ home and lost a game we should have won. Why am I this hard on our boys? Because Abia Warriors went there about the same period, came from 2 goals down and beat them 3-2 on their own turf. It was at the start of the season when Baraje was doing his coaching IT on us. Anyway, let’s forget the past and look ahead.
The Uyo defeat was our first in five games and we were unarguably the form team of the Championship so I back the boys to get back to winning ways.
It’s likely that Ikhana will revert to playing what looks like four attackers at home tomorrow. The manner we have played at home has been a joy to watch and I hope that he gives a start to Meschak. I’ve seen the guy play and I think he is a good player and with the right nurturing, he should become one of the best strikers in the League.
Bashri’s injury worries me a great deal because of what he offers the team. To me, I will always prefer him to Boumsong who I think needs to work on his movement and positioning. Another player I want back into the team is Uche John. The former Kaduna United defender was the higher scoring defender last season with 6 goals and with the 3 in the Federations Cup already this season, he’s got goals but aside that, I like the steel and composure he brings to our defense line.
Bayelsa’s attack will be buoyed by that derby spanking of Nembe City but I don’t think they will have it that easy against us at the Enyimba Stadium. For us, the key remains to start the game better. Get an early goal to deflate any hopes of anyone making himself a hero for the visitors. Ikhana should draft in any two of Nzube, Sokari or Etor back in the starting eleven. It’s our movement off the ball and the interchanging of positions between the attackers that should leave their defenders guessing.
My preferred XI: Godwin, Ojobo, Udorji, Anyanwu, Esieme. Olabiyi, Sokari, Zenke, Etor, Mfon, Meshak.
We should have a full house at the Stadium because it is a Sunday game and while it will not be an easy game, it is one that we cannot afford to lose to keep our hopes alive for the title. Let’s get back on track on Sunday 4pm.
